Time for T-Levels

As the first T-Level students completed their courses this summer, we take a closer look at the Education and Childcare T-Level

This summer we saw the first cohort of students receiving their T Level results. Around 1,000 students received their results for the first three T Level courses that were introduced in September 2020. The courses cover a range of specialist areas, including construction, healthcare, accounting and engineering as well as a new early years qualification – Education and Childcare.

What are T Levels?
T Levels are new technical qualifications that help young people progress into work, university or an apprenticeship. They are twoyear long courses that are broadly equivalent to three A Levels and accrue ACAS points. From September 2022 onward, around 175 schools, colleges and further education providers will be offering T Levels.

What are the benefits of completing a T Level?
T Levels offer young people a unique opportunity to gain the skills businesses need in a range of highly valued careers – including in early education. The courses have been developed in collaboration with more than 250 leading employers, ensuring that the curriculum sets students on a path towards a rewarding career.

Each course also includes a nine-week industry placement, giving students valuable experience in the workplace and allowing them a chance to develop practical skills alongside their studies.

Students from the first cohort to study T Levels have secured job offers or offers from prestigious universities, as well as options for further training or apprenticeships in their chosen fields.

What are the T Level grades?
T Level students receive a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* grade. Their overall grade is derived from the grades they achieved on the core course components and occupational specialisms. 92.2% of T Level students achieved at least a Pass this year.

Romilly Horner, City College Norwich

Romilly Horner, aged 18 from Norwich, studied a T Level in Education and Childcare. Inspired by her mum who is a teacher, Romilly decided to pursue a career in education and childcare, a sector she has been passionate about from a young age.

As part of her T Level, Romilly completed her industry placement at City Primary School in Norwich. Romilly discovered her passion for teaching on placement and is delighted to have secured a full-time role as a Teaching Assistant starting this September at the school.

Romilly said: “The course is really well designed. It is broadly equivalent in size to three A Levels and combines a mix of learning and on-the-job training - which really helped boost my confidence in the classroom. Being a teacher can shape lives. I think it’s amazing to play a role in this and provide young learners with skills they will use for the rest of their lives, from telling the time to basic maths and counting.”

Aaron said: “I really enjoyed the work placement part of the course. I am learning many skills at the placement which makes it very rewarding. The support that I receive from the LSA is amazing and they have fully supported me throughout my journey at Strode College.”
