Paying in Kind

Here’s how Alliance members have been spreading a bit of cheer by ‘paying’ for their tickets to our annual conference with a good deed

The Alliance’s annual conference – Small Steps, Big Changes – takes place on 9 June. To support the event’s aim of encouraging us to look at the small things we can do to make a different to the world, the Alliance has been asking members to do a good deed – either individually or as a setting – in place of a ticket fee.

Here’s what some of our attendees have been doing in the build up to our conference…

Sustainable superheroes

Children at Little Darlings Nursery in Harrow dressed up as superheroes to pick up litter in their local park. Little picking helps improve the local environment for wildlife and allows waste to be recycled where possible. Not only did the children have fun dressing up and doing a good deed, but they also learned about recycling and the environment and extended their language by talking about some of the items they picked up.

Food waste warriors

The team at Buzzee Beez Pre-school in Harlow, Essex, have been collecting food from supermarkets that would otherwise be thrown away as waste. Instead, it is shared with the setting’s families, reducing food waste. Preventing food from going to waste is an effective way of conserving natural resources and reducing greenhouse gases. The initiative has also helped increase the children’s access to a range of new fresh foods. Deputy manager Kelly organises the scheme with the team on their own time.

Community care

Stanway Pre-school in Colchester, Essex, has been helping its local community with a week-long kindness event. Parents donated food, which was carried on minitrolleys to the local co-op food bank basket and the setting took part in several litter picks. The children also delivered pansies to the pre-school’s neighbours and paid a visit to the local residential care home, taking some flowers for their garden. After hearing how delighted the residents were with the children’s visit, the setting plans to return and set up regular visits.
