TRAINING AND CPD
How engaging with interactive, immersive scenarios can transform your approach to early years training
The way we approach professional development in the early years sector is changing – and fast. The Early Years Alliance, in partnership with Metaverse Learning, has launched a groundbreaking initiative: Early Years Metaverse, a suite of immersive virtual reality (VR) training scenarios, designed to give educators realistic, practical experiences without leaving their home or workplace. Even better, this innovative training is free for Alliance members (subject to membership type), making it an accessible and transformative resource for thousands of educators across the UK.
Traditional training methods using case studies, whether classroom-based or online, often struggle to replicate the complexity and nuance of real-life early years settings.
For educators, especially those new to the profession, this gap can lead to uncertainty when faced with challenging situations. The immersive scenarios bridges that gap by offering a safe, interactive environment where educators can practise skills, build confidence, and explore best practice in a way that feels authentic.
Using VR technology, participants navigate a virtual early years setting called Tiny Trees Family Hub, complete with realistic spaces and scenarios. Whether accessed via a headset, laptop, or tablet, the experience is designed to be intuitive and engaging. Educators can interact with tasks, make decisions and see the consequences of their actions, all without the pressure of a real-world setting.
When developing these scenarios, the Alliance has worked hard to ensure they align with sector priorities and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.
This ensures that the scenarios are not only technologically advanced but also pedagogically sound, reflecting the realities of early years practice and the challenges educators face every day.
The Alliance currently offers five core modules with many more in development, each tackling a critical area of early years practice:
1. Supporting children’s smooth transitions
Transitions are a constant in young children’s lives – from moving rooms within a setting to starting school or coping with changes at home. This scenario helps practitioners identify different types of transitions and explore strategies to support children sensitively, building resilience and emotional security.
2. Supporting language and communication
Communication and language underpin all areas of learning, yet one in ten children experience difficulties in this domain. This module equips educators with practical techniques to foster positive interactions, recognise verbal and non-verbal cues, and extend children’s language development through everyday practice.
3. Confidentiality and information sharing
Safeguarding and data protection are nonnegotiable in early years settings. This scenario guides practitioners through the principles of safe information sharing, helping them understand what to share, when, and with whom, while maintaining confidentiality and complying with legal requirements.
4. Maintaining good hygiene and infection control
From managing illness to preventing cross-contamination, hygiene is a cornerstone of safe practice. This module allows educators to practise identifying infection risks and implementing robust hygiene protocols in a virtual environment, reinforcing best practice without real-world consequences.
5. Planning for and responding to emergency incidents
This module will help learners understand not only the practical steps required in an emergency, but also the importance of clear communication, planning, preparation decision-making, and safeguarding the wellbeing of children and colleagues.
Accessibility is key. Alliance members can access these modules via EYA Central, our training and resource one-stop shop. The technology is designed to accommodate different learning styles and levels of digital confidence, with options for:
This multi-modal approach ensures that immersive learning is not a one-off novelty but a core part of professional development, integrated into existing CPD plans.
The Early Years Alliance and Metaverse Learning are already exploring new scenarios to expand the programme, with future modules likely to cover areas such as baby room practice, looking towards your Ofsted inspection special educational needs.
As technology continues to evolve, immersive learning is set to become a cornerstone of early years CPD, empowering educators, enriching practice and, ultimately, improving outcomes for children.
