“We are educators”

As part of our #WeAreEducators campaign, early years providers have been sharing examples of the fantastic work they do to help support children’s learning and development – here are some of the best examples they shared...

Maths skills

Madresfield Early Years Centre in Malvern has been looking at mathematics outdoors. This included an activity where children enjoyed making their own frames outdoors with sticks and pebbles.

Rainy days

Bad weather didn’t stop the Rainbow Nursery exploring the outdoors. During the recent wet weather children used puddles to mix up a range of colours. The mark making exercise also gave them a chance to engage in sensory play which helped them to develop critical thinking and language skills.

Exploring colours

Footsteps Pre-school in Sri Lanka made the most of the outdoors by encouraging children to explore their sense of sight outdoors by viewing a range on objects through coloured magnifiers.

Sensory skills

Children at the Kindergarden Pre-School in Gloucestershire developed their coordination and sensory skills and strengthened their hand muscles by using mashers and garlic pressures to make shapes in play dough.

Orchard adventures

Chewton Common Playgroup in Dorset learnt about sustainability by planting their own orchard. Parents and grandparents helped the children to plant trees. Then the fruit from the trees was shared during snack time.

Hedgehog hotel

At Hummingbird Pre-school in Norfolk they installed bird and hedgehog houses to learn about the environment and wildlife. At the setting, the children also recycled paper and plastic and put fruit and vegetable peel into the compost after mealtimes.

Mark making

Ladybirds Nursery in Runcorn has been exploring mark making using rolls of paper and coloured pencils.
