Children at Arbury Preschool in Cambridge have harvested potatoes, which they had grown themselves from seeds earlier in the year. Sarah, manager at the setting, said: “This was a great opportunity for us to show the children the whole process of growing vegetables and how not that much space is needed to grow your own food. Next, we’ll be looking at the various ways we can cook potatoes and try them during snack time.”
Staff at Barnack Pre-school in Stamford have been working hard on a new sensory room for younger children at the setting. With the help of a National Lottery Grant, the team were able to move a cloakroom to make room for the new space, which offers a quiet, relaxing experience for all children using sensory lighting, toys and interactive games. Manager Kirsty said: “Sometimes children need a quiet space away where they can relax calmly to take charge of their emotions. It also gives us an additional space for our younger group to have age-appropriate small group activities.”
Children at Ladywell Nursery in London explored the theme of sustainability by looking at how much rubbish they throw away and what can be recycled. They looked at a range of items, spotting which ones had recyclable symbols on them. Manager Francesa says: “The children wanted to know what happens to our rubbish once we put it in the bin, so when it was time for it to be collected, we took them out to watch. They were fascinated by the mechanics of the bins being raises and emptied.”
